Obituary

Anna Elizabeth Gottschalk, 107 of rural Freeport died Friday, June 20, 2014 at her home. Born March 23, 1907 in Surrey, ND she was the daughter of Daniel S. and Nora E. (Yoder) Petry. She attended Minot North Dakota State University, Mt. Morris College and Dekalb University. Anna spent 30 years teaching, she taught all 8 grades at Cranes Grove one room school house, Baileyville two room school house and Forreston 6th, 7th and 8th grade Language Arts and was assistant Librarian at Forreston High School. She was married and widowed four times, they include Frank Borchers from 1933-1952, Charles Zumdahl from 1955-1968, Merle Hawbecker from1971-1978 and Herman Gottschalk from 1985-1991. While living in Arizona she was active in the Sunshine Girls, which was an organization that visited shut ins. She was involved in the Silver Thimbles sewing club where she made crib blankets and Kimonos for Maricopa County Hospital. She was a member of Zion Church and was superintendent of the children's department for 20 years. She was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and was past president of the Cranes Grove Cemetery association. Surviving are granddaughter Cindy (Don) Hull of Freeport, sister-in-law Enid Petry of Minot, ND, step daughter-in-law Dolores Gottschalk of Chicago, step son-in-law Donald Horst of Mt. Morris, several nieces and nephews, several step grand and great grandchildren and numerous friends and neighbors. Preceding her in death were her parents, four husbands, one son Norman Borchers and eight brothers. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Walker Mortuary. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Baileyville Reformed Church with Reverend Bruce Otto officiating. Burial will be at the Cranes Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her name. A special thank you to Dr. Tawfik, his entire staff and special friend Geraldine Timmer.
