Obituary

Bernita J. Stubbe, 93, of Freeport died Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the Manor Court of Liberty Village in Freeport. Born June 3, 1919 in Forreston, she was the daughter of Joseph and Harriett (Seiple) Maas. She was a 1937 graduate of Forreston High School and attended the
De Kalb Teachers College. On August 8, 1939 she and George Stubbe were united in marriage in Dubuque, IA. Bernita was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church in Freeport and served as Cradle Roll chairperson at the church for more than 20 years, the church's Financial Secretary, member of several women's circles and pianist for a number of services at area nursing homes. For over twenty-five years she volunteered at the Freeport hospital and made stuffed toys for the children's ward. She enjoyed writing devotional materials and poems, loved doing crossword puzzles, anagrams, table games and sending cards and notes to friends. She is survived by her son Rev. Dr. Arlon (Jozette) Stubbe of Nokomis, FL; two grandchildren Dawn (Bruce) Hagen of Plainfield, IN, Bethany (Patrick) Sullivan of Paulden, AZ; one great grandchild Zoe Copeland, three step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, nieces and nephew; sister-in-law Genevieve Maas of Alabama. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, two brothers William and Joseph, one niece. Visitation will be 12:00 noon until 1:30pm Monday at First Lutheran Church, Freeport. Funeral service will be 1:30 pm Monday at First Lutheran Church with Reverend Keith Johnson officiating.
A memorial fund has been established in her name. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum.
