FREEPORT - Betty L. Meyers, 87, of Freeport died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at Manor Court.
Born June 15, 1919, she was the daughter of Edward and Edna (Heeren) Laughlin. She married Delmer R. Meyers on Feb. 9, 1947. He preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1994.
Betty was a graduate of Freeport High School and Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
She and Delmer spent most of their married years in Davis, where she was a full-time mom, gardener, Cub Scout den leader, church choir singer and children's choir director of Davis United Methodist church and an occasional subsitute teacher. She was active in putting on musical programs for many civic and church groups, including weddings, funerals, the Amity Follies and the Joy Singers.
After retiring to Freeport, Betty volunteered at the hospital, Mother Hubbard's Kiddie Cupboard and Lincoln-Douglas School as a reading tutor. Many kids she came into contact with remembered her as "Grandma Betty." She also enjoyed exercise class at the senior center.
Betty is survived by one son, Kim R. (Pamela K.) Meyers of Prophetstown; two daughters, Gena C. Meyers of Shorewood, and Julie L. (Christopher M.) Lawrence of Crystal Lake; and two grandchildren, Phillip R. (Ashley) Meyers of Dekalb and Emily K. Meyers of Prophetstown; one brother, Shirl B. (Hope) Laughlin of Freeport.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one great-grandchild, Maddix Meyers; one brother, Everett E. Laughlin.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 26 at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Q. Bowden and Rev. Bruce Janes officiating. Cremation rights were accorded.
A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers.
