Charles R. "Chuck" Peterson , age 87 of Freeport, IL, passed away at home on Friday, May 21, 2021.  He was born in Rockford, IL on September 29, 1933, the son of the late Oscar and Clarice (Ohlson) Peterson.  He was a 1952 graduate of Rockford East High School.  Chuck served in the US Navy from 1955-1957, based in Oklahoma and on the USS Tarawa, an anti-sub aircraft carrier. Chuck worked for Nicor Gas for 38 years.  He was a member of the Freeport YMCA, Blackhawk Athletic Club, Freeport Jaycees and the Germania Club.

Chuck joined the Freeport YMCA upon his retirement and enjoyed weekly group fitness and pool classes. An avid golfer all his life, he was part of various leagues with co-workers, family and friends.  Fishing was also a passion and he took many memorable trips to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Canada.

Survivors include his four children: daughters Kathryn Johnson of Rockford, IL and Karen (Tom) Guenther of Fond du Lac, WI; sons Tom (Beth) Peterson of Freeport, IL and Gary (Julie) Peterson of Geneva, IL and five grandchildren: Clay and Nick Guenther and Zach, Kate and Annie Peterson.  He is also survived by his brother, John Peterson, of Rockford, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sarah (Sally) Frohs, two daughters, Janice (1977) and Joan (2009) Peterson, and son-in-law, Roger Johnson.

The family would like to thank FHN Hospice and Home Indeed for their kindness and compassionate care during Chuck's recent illness.
