Clarence L. Lubbers, 87, passed away on January 8, 2014 at his Freeport home.
Clarence was born April 11, 1926 in Freeport to John and Edna (Dorsey) Lubbers.
He attended Freeport public schools and served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII.
Clarence married Maxine Meyers June, 1949. After her death he married Janet Kortemeier in August, 1972.
Clarence worked for the Freeport City Fire Department for 27 years, was involved as a Boy Scout leader for many years, was a member of Freeport Mennonite Church where he enjoyed the roles of usher, trustee and groundskeeper. Clarence enjoyed bicycling, camping and traveling to various places including the Canadian Rockies and Nova Scotia. He was co-owner and operator of Valspar Decorating Center for 12 years. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail in his work.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Thomas (Rebecca) Lubbers of Hartville, Ohio and Jeffrey (Donna) Lubbers of Afolkey, IL; daughter-in-law, Sharon Lubbers of Kearney, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, Nicholas (Sarah) Lubbers, Alysia (Brian) Slusser, Karena (Karl) Mercer, Amity (J.B.) Brandt, Serenity (Troy) Kelsey, J.Hayden Lubbers, Peter Lubbers, Eli Lubbers; seven great-grandchildren Allison, Trent, Cole, Copper, Ian, Mae, Jack.
Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine and son, Kenneth.
The family is superbly grateful to Donna Lubbers, R.N., for the flawless care that she provided for her father-in-law each day for ten weeks. Special thanks to FHN Hospice for their wonderful care and attention during his latter days.
A Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Freeport Mennonite Church with a lunch to follow.
Burial will be at the Freeport Mennonite Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been created for the Freeport Mennonite Church.
