Collin D. Chriss, age 96, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026. He would have celebrated his 97th birthday on March 30.

Born in Ogle County, IL on March 30, 1929, Collin was the son of Myrtle and Paul Chriss and the brother of Sam (Velva) Chriss. Following his service in the United States Army, Collin returned home and, alongside his beloved wife of 69 years, Marjorie Chriss (Knorr), built a life devoted to family, friends, and hard work.

Collin farmed for many years before beginning his work as a milk tester, a profession through which he became well known and respected throughout the local farming communities he served. Later, Collin and Marjorie moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where he worked for Dairy Lab Services, a milk-testing laboratory affiliated with the National Dairy Herd Improvement Association. During his career, Collin was recognized for his outstanding leadership and contributions within the national dairy industry and dairy laboratory services.

Upon retirement, they returned to Freeport, Illinois, where they remained close to family and longtime friends.

Collin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared an especially close bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as “Grandpa Hook.” His steady presence, quiet humor, and gentle strength created lasting memories that will be cherished.

Collin is survived by his children: Calvin (Sue) Chriss of Pearl City, Illinois; Carl (Patty) Chriss of Freeport, Illinois; Cindy (Robert) Davis of Pearl City, Illinois; and Charlene (Arlan) Neilson of Pearl City, Illinois; nine grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Collin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, parents, sibling, and granddaughter.

A private family service will be held at Walker Mortuary.

Collin’s legacy lives on through the family he cherished, the values he embodied, and the quiet impact he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

The family would like to acknowledge Serenity Estates of Lena and St. Croix Hospice for their care during Collin’s final days.
