Dale Eldon Buss 82, lifelong resident of Stephenson County, Illinois, entered into his rest on January 2, 2008 at home in Freeport, Illinois.
Dale was born in Lena, Illinois on October 3, 1925 to George A. and Addie (Ellis) Buss. He was a graduate of Lena High School Class of 1943. He was drafted in the United States Army in 1953 and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, serving in the Transportation Division until 1956. Upon his return to Lena, he farmed for several years and was a truck driver until his retirement in 1986. In retirement he mowed fairways for the Lena Golf Course for 6 years. While still able to drive he made the coffee for the men that gathered at Baker's Barn in Lena.
He married Shirley Pontnack on June 26, 1970 in Davis, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, his sister Helene Schlafer, mother in-law, Helen Pontnack, and the children: Gary (Marcia) Buss, Bonnie (Jerry) Curran, Les Buss of Lena; George (Mona) Buss and Stephania (Sam Jr.) Jackson, Vernon (Laurie) Mills, Sherry (Duane) Wenzel, Shelby Douglas, of Freeport. He leaves 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by the men at Baker's Barn.
He was predeceased by his parents, his previous wife Betty Wales; his brother Ellis; his sisters Phyllis (Hugh) Schoeny and Georgene Robieson; a child Victor Mills; son-in-law Tom Douglas; and his long-time feline companion, Opie.
Memberships included Teamsters Union 325 and the Lincoln Douglas Society of Freeport.
In lieu of flowers a memorial is established to support programs at the Boy Scout Camp (Canyon Camp) at Stockton where Dale attended as a youth and helped build the original commissary/trading post in 1937.
Cremation rights were accorded.
Condolences may be shared on Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Walker Mortuary.
Memorial service will be Saturday 11 a.m. at Walker Mortuary with Reverend Stephen Precht and Reverend Fred Woodruff officiating.
