DALE A. JOHNSON, 90 FREEPORT - Dale A. Johnson, 90, passed away Monday, August 10, 2015, in Presence St. Joseph Center, after a lengthy illness. He was born, February 22, 1925, in Freeport, IL, to George and Hazel (Wallick) Johnson. Dale served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving his time in North Africa and Europe. He was a lifetime card carrier for the VFW. Before leaving for the war he married Betty Jane Gore, on January 5, 1944, which began their 71 year membership at Freeport First United Methodist Church. They enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the United States and Canada after their retirements. During his life, he was employed at Kahl's Bottled Gas, which went on to become Northern Propane Gas, Buckeye Gas and finally, Ferrell Gas. He retired in 1987. He also coached Little League Baseball during the 1960's and served as their commissioner during the 1970's. Dale was a member of First United Methodist Church of Freeport and was active in the Methodist Men's Group and served as a trustee. He is survived by three children, sons, Terry (Georgi), and Kim, both of Freeport and daughter, Kathie of Pickens, SC; three grandchildren, Erika (Patrick) Straka of Nashotah, WI, Brendan (Bran-Dea) of Chicago, and Thomas of Freeport; five great-grandchildren, Grant, Sean, Jane, Anne, and Kane Straka; sister, Phyllis Weigel of Freeport; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and two sisters. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
