Obituary

Freeport: Darrel H. Miller, 80, died Sunday January 11, 2004 at FHN Memorial Hospital with his family at his side. Born February 8, 1923 in Adeline, IL he was the son of Elton and Anna (Abels) Miller. On April 21, 1945 he married Maxine K. Salsbury in Freeport.
He graduated from Freeport High School class of 1941 he was a varsity letterman in cross-country and track. His life's work was what he loved, "Farming". While he was farming he also worked at Burgess Battery, John Deer and as a salesman for DeKalb Feed & Seed, and Moormans Feed. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church for over 50 years serving on many committees for the church. He was also a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Fellowship Sunday school class. He was associated with the Stephenson County Fair for over 50 years active as a Poultry Judge for the fair and many other area county fairs and state fairs. He was on the Stephenson County Fair Board and was their poultry superintendent for many years. He showed chickens at the state and national levels. He was on the Stephenson County Extension Council, 4H Youth Council and a 4H Leader, a member of the Farm Bureau, Forreston Sheep Breeders, Northern Illinois Wildlife Club, Toastmasters, Freeport and Lena area Barber Shoppers and was a master gardener. He was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to Trap, Fish and just be outdoors with nature. Surviving is his wife, one daughter Deb (Miller) Brown of Freeport, two sons Jerry (Susan) of Geneva, IL and Greg A. (Sheila) of Freeport, three Grandchildren Denise Miller of Prospect Heights, Jeff Miller of Geneva and Kayla Miller of Freeport. Two brothers, Owen Miller of Freeport and Elton "Doc" (Mary) Miller of Rockford, one sister, Lois Allan of Loves Park, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. In celebration of his life and his son Greg's birthday his Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Thursday at Faith United Methodist Church with the Reverend Douglas Q. Bowden officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 pm at Walker Mortuary. A memorial has been established in his name.
