David Gardner Briggs, 84, passed away September 24, 2016, the son of John W. and Ruth R. (Bell) Briggs, born on July 31, 1932 in Freeport, Il.
David graduated from Freeport High School in 1951. As a member of the first Future Farmers of America class offered at Freeport High School, he made cherished friendships with Ronny Pieper, Klein Bardell, and Bill and Lyle Nesemeyer that lasted over 60 years. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in December 1951 and, after graduating at the top of his training class, served 3 years in Germany. After completing his service, he married Barbara Shelly on November 30, 1956.
David worked for Commonwealth Edison for 37 years, retiring in October of 1992. After retirement, he volunteered teaching electrical safety to grade school students, 4H groups, and Boy Scouts. He also judged 4H projects at Stephenson, Carroll, and Jo Davies County Fairs. An outdoorsman all his life, he enjoyed duck hunting with his friends. He was a member of the Eagles Club and 317th Air Force Group, Retired. A talented artist, woodcarver and painter of duck decoys, shorebirds, and fish, his decoys won many awards, and his works can still be found in many Freeport area homes.
David is survived by his wife, Barbara (Shelly) Briggs, son David Kevin Briggs (Pam Rohrbacker) of Burnsville, MN; daughter Shelly Briggs Underhill (Ed Bowden) of Kenosha,WI; daughter Sheila Briggs Wagner (Brad) of Freeport. Grandchildren include Laura Briggs and Tyler Briggs, both of Richfield, MN; Edward Underhill of Los Angeles, CA; Wyatt Underhill of Baltimore, MD; Rebecca Wagner of Ames, IA; and Owen Wagner of Freeport. Also surviving is a brother Gerry (Corrinne) Briggs of Edina, MN; a sister Jean Leid of Freeport; and a brother-in-law Larry (Mary) Shelly of Ridott, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
David was so well loved; he will be missed so much by so many. The family wants to thank Dr. Workman and FHN Highland View Staff for their excellent care of David.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions toward a scholarship fund for a deserving FFA student to study agriculture or to FHN Hospice.
A celebration of life will be October 8, 2016.
