David L. McNary, 99, of Freeport, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 at Freeport Rehab and Healthcare Center. Born March 5, 1908 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of Rev. David Littell and Jean Roberson McNary. David married Eleanor Stearns of Rochester, MN on June 22, 1934. They had three children Elizabeth (Peter) Hesse of Denver, David (Dugle) D. (Catherine) McNary of Oak Park and Alan G. McNary of Freeport.
David was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor January 2000 and his six siblings, Arthur, Jean, Josephine, Elizabeth, Agnes and Louise. He is survived by his three children and six grand children Seth (Vanessa) McNary of New York City, Colin McNary of New York City, Ian McNary of Brooklyn, NY, Caitlin McNary of Cairo, Egypt, Megan Hesse of Denver and Victoria(Christopher) Sell of Brooklyn, NY.
David graduated from Freeport High School and earned a Bachelor's degree in accounting at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and then became a Certified Public Accountant. He worked for several years with Arthur Anderson in Detroit, returned to Freeport to work as a county tax collector for Stephen County driving all the back roads of the county. In 1934 he joined Furst McNess Company and was Secretary of the Company until he retired in 1974. He remained an honorary member of the board until his death.
David was an active member of the community serving on a number of boards including The Boy Scouts, Freeport Water Board, Freeport Memorial Hospital, Rockford Blue Cross Blue Shield, Freeport Country Club and the YMCA.
An avid golfer he also loved playing and listening to piano music, bowling, dancing, canoeing, photography and traveling throughout the world. In 1943 he won the Illinois CPA state golf tournament.
Services will be held Saturday, September 22nd at 11:00 at the First Presbyterian Church, 302 West Stephenson. Stephenson Street. A reception will follow. Donations may be given in his name to the Freeport First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or the FHN Foundation for the Freeport Memorial Hospital.
