Delbert D. Scovel, age 88 of Freeport, IL passed away Monday, December 12, 2016 at the Provena St. Joseph Center in Freeport. He was born April 16, 1928; the son of the late Harold and Alice (Fulton) Scovel. He married Jeanette Nampel in 1954.


Delbert served 8 years in the Merchant Marines. He then served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for over 40 years. He also worked part time for Donahue Motors. Delbert was a member of the AM Vets and the American Legion. He loved the history of Freeport and enjoyed reminiscing about it's glory days.


He is survived by two daughters, Diane (Gene) Toepfer of Belvidere, IL and Julia Scovel of Miami, FL; three sons, David (Vicky) of Freeport, Steve (Robin) Scovel of Edmond, OK and Jon (Nancy) Scovel of Phoenix, AZ; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Jeanette; son, Jerry; sister, Shirley; and mother and father-in-law, Alice & Joseph Nampel.


Cremation rites have been accorded. Upon his wishes, no services will be held. Interment will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.
