Donald G. Peterson, age 84 of Rockford, IL, passed away at home on Thursday, November 16, 2017. He was born March 10, 1933 in Spring Grove, WI; the son of the late Maxwell and Freida (Hutzel) Peterson. Donald served in the United States Air Force in the Military Police from 1951-1955. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He had worked for Hamilton/Sunstrand in Rockford, IL for 30 years. After retiring, he worked security for different places in Rockford. He was a member of City First Church of Rockford where he taught Sunday School. He was also a member of the American Legion. Donald enjoyed volunteering at Midway Village and the Illinois Railroad Museum. He had a passion for building model Airforce planes. He was known to be a strong, independent hard worker. He also quietly liked to do handy work for the church without anyone knowing. He was a caring and thoughtful person who liked helping others. Most of all, Donald was a loving father and grandfather.
He is survived by five sons, Donald E. Peterson, Danny Peterson, Kim (Lori) Peterson, Christopher Peterson, and Kevin Peterson all of Rockford; daughter, Melissa (Steve Borsini) Duchess of Rockford; former wife, Anne Johnson Totenhagen of Rockford; son-in-law John Hollar of Machesney Park, IL; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Holly Hollar; sisters, Dolores Koester and Patsy Kubatzke; and brother, Maxwell Peterson.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, November, 25, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Dakota, IL. There will be a visitation before the service beginning at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at the Dakota Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.
