Obituary

Donna M. (nee Fischer) Schopf passed away peacefully on December 29, 2023.  Donna was born in Rockford, Illinois on August 21, 1931 to Ward and Marguerite (Klinger) Fischer.  Donna was married to Vernon "Butch" Schopf on March 20, 1954 at Ridott Christian Church in German Valley, IL.  Donna was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Freeport and was a teacher's aide at Immanuel Lutheran School for eighteen years.  Most recently, Donna spent time volunteering at Immanuel Lutheran School reading to the kindergarten children, which was an enormous passion and rewarding opportunity for her.  Donna was recognized for her dedication to reading to the children by being a recipient of WREX TV's 815 Inspiring Award.   Donna was also a charter member of Immanuel Lutheran's GEMS Club and handstitched baptismal napkins for Immanuel Lutheran for over 40 years.

Donna enjoyed coffee and conversation with her friends on a weekly basis, along with monthly lunches with her high school friends.  Donna also looked forward to gatherings with her family to catch up on their active lives.  Donna graduated from Leaf River High School and completed cosmetology training at Rockford College of Beauty Culture.  Donna worked for a number of years as a stylist in Freeport while also working side-by-side with Butch farming for 40 years.

Donna is survived by her daughter Susan Johnson (Rowdy Bradle) of Stillman Valley, IL; son David (Judy) Schopf of Freeport, and daughter Joanne (Raymond) Ertel of Des Plaines, IL; former son-in-law Dean Johnson and by seven grandchildren Robert (Sara) Schopf, John (fiancé Staci) Schopf, Andrew (Cathy) Schopf, Stephanie (Mitch) Farris, Sherri (Jeff) Kalmer, Sarah (Craig) Burmeister and Suzanne Johnson.  She is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, Carter, Jaxson, Kennedy, Grayson, McKinley, Claire and Lincoln Schopf, Callan, Ashlyn and Adrienne Farris, Ty and Paige Kalmer, Tad Burmeister, her sister Marilyn (Richard) Zimmerman as well with several nieces and nephews.  Donna was proceeded in death by her husband, Butch, infant daughter Sherry Ann, parents and in-laws, Elmer and Vera Schopf

Services will be held on  Saturday, January 6, 2024 with visitation starting at 9:30AM and funeral services beginning at 11:00AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Freeport with Pastor Zachery Klatt officiating.   Honorary pallbearer will be Donna's grandsons Bob, John, Andy, Jeff, Mitch and Craig.  A celebration of life luncheon will be held at the church following funeral services.  Interment will be private at Gund Cemetery in Freeport.

Donna's family would like to thank the staff of FHN Hospice, with special thanks to Andrea, Deb, Candice along with sincere appreciation to caregivers, Laurie and Linda, for their special comfort and support.
