Freeport - Doris E. Best, 83, formerly of Orangeville, died Saturday, September, 2007 at Manor Court in Freeport.
Born in 1924, in rural Rock City, she was the daughter of Harrison H. and Viola M. (Meier) Meinert. She graduated from the three-year Davis High School in 1941, from Orangeville High School in 1942, and the Freeport Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1946.
Doris married Vernon C. Best at what is now the United Church of Christ of Davis, IL in July 1947. Upon Vernon's completion of dental college in 1948, they moved to Orangeville, where they resided for over 55 years. They moved to Freeport Liberty Village in October 2004. She was a member of the Orangeville United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women, and since moving to Freeport, a member of Bethany United Church of Christ.
Doris enjoyed nature and bird watching, gardening, sewing, and other crafts. Quilt-making with the women of the church was a highlight of each week. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She supported her progeny's academic, cultural, and athletic endeavors.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon, two daughters and two sons; Caryl (John) Buford of Orangeville, Larry (Noreen) Best of Blue Grass, IA, LaVerne (Kathleen) of Orangeville, and Lou Ann (Thomas) Talley of Albany, GA; 5 grandchildren, Heather, Alison, Kaitlyn, Eric, and Daniel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Allen (Shirla) Meinert.
Funeral service will be Wednesday 11 a.m. at Orangeville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be Wednesday 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.
Memorials have been established for Orangeville United Methodist Church and FHN Hospice.
