Edith (Edie) Ellen Reuber, 96, of Freeport passed away peacefully on June 11th. Edith Shain was born in Monroe, Wisconsin on September 21, 1928 to Archie and Kathryn (Shain) Pilcher. She graduated form Freeport High School in 1946.
She married Melvin Hill in 1949 and they had 4 children; Deborah, Sandra, Gary and Lisa. Melvin passed away in 1984.
She married Leroy Schmelzer in 1985 and moved to Brainerd, Minnesota and he passed away in 1988. Edith then moved back to Freeport and married Arnold Reuber in 1998 and he passed in 2017.
Edith attended First English Lutheran Church in Freeport for many years. She worked at Micro Switch Honeywell for 25 years, in various positions including group leader. After retirement, she worked/hosted at several small diners in Freeport. Also after retirement, Edith volunteered at the VA Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin for 15 years and drove several other women who volunteered there. Edith was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary from 1974 to 2025. She enjoyed Bingo (with her daughter Lisa) at various places. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, enjoyed music and loved to dance. She was also an avid reader. Edith was a social butterfly and loved being around people with always a kind word for and about everyone.
Edith is survived by her sister, Joyce Shubert of Freeport formerly of Mt. Carroll; daughters, Sandra (Bob Lease) Parks of Orangeville; Lisa (Scott) Farrar and Deborah Collalti of Freeport; son, Gary Hill of Monroe, WI and a special step-daughter, Ellen (Jeff Wood) Tell of Cedarville. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; Josh (Erin) Hill, Jeremy (Jamie) Hill, Jenna Hill, Natasha (Joel) Holbert, Kendra (Quincy) Richmond and Joey Arola of Freeport; Johanna (Andrew Malson) Parks of Appleton, WI, Chad (Shira) Parks of Madison, WI, Chelsey (Fred) Marais of Wakonda, SD and Camrie Hill of Clinton, WI. She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
Edith was preceded in death by her mother and father, stepfather, Leroy Pilcher; siblings, Darrel, Doris, Alvin, Carol, Norma Jean and Mary Sue; son-in-law, Gary Collalti, grandson-in-law, Jonathan Tolley and grandson, Michael F. Parks Jr.
Special thanks and love to Edith's granddaughter, Natasha Holbert for her great and loving personal and professional care over the last years. Natasha and Edith had a strong and special bond.
Also thank you to all the nurses and CNA's at Manor Court of Liberty Village for their wonderful care and to FHN Hospice for their help, care and concern.
There will be a visitation on Friday, June 20th beginning at 10am with the service to follow at 11am at Orangeville United Methodist Church in Orangeville, Il with a luncheon to follow at the church. Her burial will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Freeport. A memorial fund has been established. Condolences can be left for the family at www.walkermortuary.com
