Obituary

Edwin David Messenger, age 75, of Freeport, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, September 11, 2025. He was born on August 12, 1950, the son of the late Harry and Viola (Horton) Messenger, Sr.

David proudly served his country as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his heroic actions. His time in the service remained a meaningful part of his life, shaping the person he became. Although it brought challenges that followed him throughout his years, he carried himself with strength and quiet resilience, and he remained deeply proud of his service and the bonds he shared with his fellow Marines.

After returning home, David faced many challenges, including the lasting effects of war and battles with addiction. Life tested him deeply, yet he continued to meet the world with faith, perseverance, and a kind heart. He believed in grace and second chances and was known for giving of himself generously to others. He found joy in simple moments and shared warmth and kindness with his community.

David had a magical green thumb and could coax life from even the most stubborn patch of earth. He found peace in the simple beauty of nature, spending hours watching birds and loving on animals, who seemed to sense the softness of his spirit. Above all, he loved his children and held them close to his heart.

David also shared a deep and unwavering love with his late wife, Lesa, and there is comfort in knowing they are together again.

He is survived by his daughters, Tiffany (Donald Todd) Messenger and Audre (Alex Frissell) Stickman; his grandchildren, Gabriel, Lillian, Simon, Duncan, and Henry; and his brother, Harry Messenger, Jr.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Condolences may be shared with his family at www.walkermortuary.com.
