Freeport
Elsie Marie Neuberger Marske, 93, went home to be with the Lord on December 6, 2015. Elsie was loved by all who knew her. Her love of life, God, her family, her friends, and love of nature were so evident in her everyday living.
Elsie was the daughter of Anna Ackerman Neuberger and William H. Neuberger. She was born July 6, 1922 in Freeport, Illinois. She lived with the family on a farm near Ridott, Illinois until she was about 12 years of age, at which time they moved to Freeport. She was a graduate of Freeport High School, class of 1940, and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1944, where she majored in sociology and elementary teaching. She was a member of Kappa Delta National Sorority.
Elsie married William H. Marske on June 16, 1944, at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi. To this union four children were born.
Elsie taught 3rd grade at Lincoln School in Freeport, and at the government nursery during WWII at Center School. After spending many years as a mother and homemaker, she returned to teaching in kindergarten at Douglas Elementary School for 19 years, retiring in 1983.
She was a Y-Teen Director at the YWCA, as well as a summer stay-at-home camp director. She was instrumental in organizing the Junior Women's Guild at the YWCA - a social and philanthropic group for young stay-at-home mothers and other young women. She served as its first president. Mrs. Marske was a member of Park Hills Evangelical Free Church and was active in its Women's Ministries. She was a member of Civic Garden Club, YWCA, Freeport Art Museum, Stephenson County Historical Society, and Friends of Oakdale.
She is survived by her four children: David (Glory), Appleton, WI; Doug (Mary), Spencer, IA; Dan (Kiki), Rockford, IL; and Deb Fry (Steve), Spokane, WA. She had 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
