Obituary

Fred D. Meinert, 82 of Monroe formerly of Davis, died Thursday September 1, 2011 at St. Clare Friedensheim. Born August 24, 1929 in Davis, he was the son of Harry and Elva (Goeke) Meinert. Fred attended and graduated from Orangeville High School in 1948. In 1951 he was drafted into the United States Army. After basic training, while on leave he married Joyce Evelyn Wise on July 5, 1951. He was then stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey where he obtained training for the military police. He was then sent to war in Korea, where he served on the front line for just a few weeks. Then was sent to Koje-do where he guarded prisoners of war. Fred purchased his farm from his father in 1964 and farmed in the Davis area until his retirement in 1980 when he went to work for Twin Grove Lumber and for his son Lauren at Zweifel Construction. He also worked for the city of Davis as grounds keeper. Fred was a lifelong member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. Fred also served on different boards for the city of Davis. He was an active member and former Post Commander of the American Legion Gold Post 676 in Durand, marching in parades and attending multiple military funerals as part of gun brigade for 21 gun salutes. After his divorce to Joyce he married Donna L. Dezell and she preceded him in death. He and Donna enjoyed 30 years of marriage, including trips with the senior bus tours. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, bowling, card playing, gardening, wood working and dancing. Surviving are five children, Lauren (Lois) Meinert of Monroe, WI, Shirla (Roy) Moody of Lamar, ARK. Kathy Morrow of Lamar, ARK., Steven (Carol) Meinert of Mulberry, ARK., and Fred L. Meinert of Monroe, WI; step granddaughter Crystal Daniel; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; two brothers Glen (Betty) Meinert of Rock City, Richard (Joann) Meinert of Rock City. Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother Martin, sister Arlene and brother-in-law Art.
