Freeport - Gary Rehfeld, 80, of Freeport passed away peacefully at his home with his daughter by his side, on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. He was born on May 5, 1943, in Freeport, to the late Kenneth and Blanche (Miller) Rehfeld. He married Debra Wirtjes on May 10, 1975 at St. John's United Church of Christ. They built a life together until her passing on September 30, 2015.
Gary served in the Air Force for six years as a Medical Technician, earning the rank of Sergeant. Stationed in England, he was able to travel much of Europe where he discovered his love of travel. Gary was an avid golfer, with an early Sunday morning standing tee time for decades. He traveled the United States with his best friend, golfing at many beautiful courses during his lifetime, always striving for his ultimate goal of a hole in one.
Gary bowled in a local league as well, enjoying the camaraderie of his friends and teammates. He worked at Micro Switch Honeywell for over 40 years managing the mainframe computers and leading his department. He was well liked and had many friends throughout his life. Gary adored his four grandchildren, and loved regaling them with stories of his past. No visit was complete until bear hugs had been distributed. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his daughter, Kate (Stephen) Eliasson of Monroe, Wisconsin; his cousin Janet Horan of Eau Claire Wisconsin; his grandchildren Jules, Sam, Isaac and Zoey Leverton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 40 years.
Services will be held on Friday, August 4th with a visitation beginning at 10am and a service to immediately follow at 11am, all at Walker Mortuary in Freeport. His final resting place will be next to his wife at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum.
Gary's family wishes to acknowledge and profoundly thank his nurses and all of the staff at Promedica/Heartland Hospice. Their care and compassion shown during his last few years at home, as well as during his final days, will never be forgotten.
