Obituary

Gene K. Dikkers, age 69 of Freeport, IL, passed away with his family by his side at OSF St. Anthony's on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. The son of the late William  and Wanda (Hutmacher) Dikkers. Gene married Kimberly Simmons on September 22, 1979, and were blessed with two wonderful children. Brendt W. Dikkers and Nicole M. (Dikkers) Manthei.

He was a 1974 graduate of Freeport Senior High School. In 1977 Gene graduated from Highland Community College, also a 1999 graduate of Columbia College with Bachelor of Business Degree. Gene was also a 2009 graduate of the HCC Leadership Institute. In 2012 Gene was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Highland Community College Foundation.

Gene's memory will be lovingly cherished by his wife Kim, his children and their spouses: Brendt (fiance Lindsey and her son Lucas), Nicole (Anthony) Manthei. Gene is also fondly remembered by his brothers Kurt (Susan) Dikkers and Steve (Dr. Michelle) Dikkers and their families.

His legacy extends through his five grandchildren: Peyton Dikkers, Lyla Dikkers, Spencer, Madisyn and Natalie Manthei and step-grandson Kaden Yaun whom he all adored.  Gene is also survived by numerous extended family members.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gary Dikkers, sister-in-law Marlene Dikkers, his in-laws, Robert and Janet Simmons, sister-in-law Teresa Hansen and brother-in-law Robert Simmons Jr., and daughter-in-law Amy Dikkers and his best four legged friends, Belle and Lady Bea.

One of Gene's loves was having a well groomed yard. He looked forward to spring and getting the mowers ready to go. His greatest love were his grandchildren. Watching Peyton play baseball and Madisyn and Natalie play softball. Talking shop with Spencer and smiling at all their antics. They made Papa Gene laugh or just shake his head. Gene's newest grandchild, Lyla was also dear to his heart.

Gene's family gives special thanks to his team of Doctors and nurses for the care and compassion they gave not only to Gene, but extended it towards his family as well.  We were truly blessed to have his medical team show unending love, compassion and empathy during this difficult time.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family memorial service will be at a later date.  Condolences may be shared at www.walkermortuary.com .

In Gene's memory if you wish to make a donation to your local food pantry in his name, that would have made him smile.  Thank you!
