Freeport: Gladys L. Wehrenberg, 89, died Sunday January 9, 2005 at Freeport Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Born August 3, 1915 in Stephenson County she was the daughter of William H. and Edna E. (Fortner) Smith. On November 30, 1932 she married Paul H. Wehrenberg in Elgin, IL. He preceded her in death November 23, 1995. Gladys farmed with her husband for many years and then she worked as a sales person for Westmoreland Fine China and Silver for over 30 years, she was a avid golfer, snow skier, bike rider and she loved boating and spending time on the Mississippi river. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She is survived by her one son, Richard H. (Doris) Wehrenberg of Damascus, two daughters, Linda L. Mercer of Bartlett, IL and Cynthia (Charles) Boeke of Freeport, two sisters, Blanche Herbig of Ridott and Mildred Wood of Freeport, sister-in-law, Elsie Welling of Rock City, 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Two special friends Ardith Wirtjes and Ann Moest both of Freeport. Her parents, husband, 2 sisters, 1 brother, 1 son-in law, Donald Mercer and 2 great grandchildren preceded her in death. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Sunday at Walker Mortuary with the Reverend Stephen Precht of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be in City Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial has been established in her name for the Diabetes Foundation.
