Obituary

Gloria "Sunny" N. Sunderlage , age 95 of Freeport, IL, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Manor Court of Freeport.  She was born in Evanston, IL on January 2, 1922, the daughter of the late Henry and Birgitta(Mathison) Otto.  Sunny married William Sunderlage on March 14, 1945 at Fort Benning during WWII; he passed away on April 30, 2008.

She was a high school graduate of Woodstock High School, Woodstock, IL.  She attended Northwestern Illinois University and graduated from Sherman Hospital's Nursing School in Elgin, IL.  She received her Bachelor's Degree in Science from the University of Buffalo in New York.  She was a Cadet Army Nurse from 1945 to 1951, and worked as an RN for a number of years in hospitals and nursing homes. Gloria was also part of a special medical team of doctors and nurses that traveled to Russia in 1988.

Her husband, William, was a career Army Officer for 21 years.  They enjoyed living at a number of bases and locations throughout the United States. They enjoyed traveling and traveled to Europe and South-East Asia.  After her husband retired from the military, they settled in Woodstock, Illinois where her husband started his own insurance agency.  They lived in Woodstock, IL for forty years and she held memberships in the Audubon Club, was president of the Woodstock Garden Club and a member of the Woodstock Women's Club.  She also taught Sunday School for St. John's Lutheran Church in Woodstock and was a member of the Son's of Norway.

Gloria and her husband eventually moved to St. Germain Wisconsin, where they were both active in the St. Germain's Lion's Club and the Rock of Ages Lutheran Church.  After her husband's death she moved to Freeport, Illinois and resided at Liberty Village. She was a member of 1 st Lutheran Church and Quota Club of Freeport.

Surviving are two sons: Tracy (Linda) Sunderlage of Ave Maria, Florida and Lt. Col. (Ret.) Terry (Kay) Sunderlage of Tomah, Wisconsin; two daughters: Lianne (Greg) Dunham of Freeport, IL and Sandra Sunderlage of Lamy, NM; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.  As she requested there will be no funeral. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date in Springstead, WI on Little Musky Lake where she and her husband enjoyed many vacations.

Her family would like to thank Liberty Village for all of the years of her excellent care, 1 st Lutheran Church especially, Arleen Olson, for all of the prayerful visitations and spiritual support.
