Freeport-Reverend Gustav E. Bloom, 76, of Freeport, died Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at the Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton.
Born April 28, 1929 in Detroit, MI he was the son of Gustav G. and Emilie (Garntowski) Bloom. He married Ruth M. Bowlby in Downers Grove on September 1, 1951.
A graduate of Elmhurst college (1952) and Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri (1955) he was ordained into the Christian ministry at his home-church, St. Paul United Church of Christ (Evangelical and Reformed), Taylor, MI, March 20, 1955.
During his ministry he served churches in Missouri and Illinois, having served as pastor of Bethany United Church of Christ, Freeport, 1963-1974.
He is a member of Bethany United Church of Christ and was recently honored with the position of Pastor Emeritus, he and Ruth having moved to Freeport at the time of his retirement in 1991. He served on many committees of the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ, including being a former delegate to the General Synod of the U.C.C. He was a member of Evergreen Lodge #170 and Scottish Rite, Valley of Freeport.
Surviving is his wife, Ruth of Freeport; 1 son, Dr. Steven M. (Susan) Bloom of Milton, WI; 1 daughter, Margretha A. Capponi of Rockford; 1 brother, Richard D. (Nancy G.) Bloom of Dayton, Oregon; seven grandchildren, Zachariah, Christopher, Katherine, and Margaret Bloom, Alexander, Andrew, and Kendra Capponi; and two nephews, Arthur and Charles Alderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
There will be a gathering for friends and family Saturday 12 noon until 2 p.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ.
Following the gathering there will be a memorial service Saturday 2 p.m.at Bethany United Church of Christ with Reverend Ward Malloy officiating.
Interment of his cremated remains will be in the Salem UCC church cemetery in Eleroy.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Bethany United Church of Christ.
