They moved to Freeport in 2014. Gus enjoyed fishing, boating, biking, auto mechanics, and being with his family. He was a true animal lover, and always took special care of his pets and grand pets. He had been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Freeport since 1994.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Henry (Charlotte); sisters, Martha Planekowsky and Elsie (Herman) Schwendeman; and nephew, Daniel Hake.
