Obituary

Harold (Sonny) A. Holtum, age 93 of Freeport, IL, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Oakley Courts Assisted Living. He was born March 25, 1925; the son of the late Harold W. and Hazel (Hahn) Holtum. He was a graduate of Freeport High School and received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI where he was a member of Kappa Eta Kappa, Delta Chapter.

Sonny served in the United States Army from 1943-1946, 295 th Ordnance Company, Heavy Maintenance. He served in Europe during WWII in the Rhineland Campaign. He married Patricia Sweitzer in 1951 in Madison, WI; she passed away in 1982. He worked for Fairbanks-Morse in Freeport until moving to Edina, MN where he worked for Honeywell for many years until retirement. Sonny married Pamela Reed in 1987 in Freeport. They lived in Edina, MN until she passed away in 2016. Sonny then moved back to his hometown of Freeport to Oakley Courts.

His memberships include the Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Freeport VFW, and he is a baptized and confirmed member of First Lutheran Church of Freeport. Sonny was a Scout Master for Edina-Morningside Boy Scout Troop 4. He co-founded Karma Kagyu Buddhist Meditation Center with his wife Pamela at their home. He was an avid reader, enjoyed Civil War history, and was an Abraham Lincoln enthusiast.

He is survived by his daughter, Jessica (David) Holtum-Schwier of Fountain, MN; son, Andrew (Tamera) Holtum of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Christopher (Jenniffer) Stoltz and Emma Holtum; great grandchildren, Saideh Stoltz and Carson Stoltz; sisters, Donna Morton of Freeport and Nancy Holtum of Freeport; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by adopted children from his marriage to Pamela: Joseph A. (Julie) Reed and Alexia Reed-Holtum and their children, Isabella Gerry and Joseph T. Reed; and his faithful dog, Bodhi. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia; and wife, Pamela.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1 st at 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Freeport, Rev. Keith Johnson presiding. There will be a visitation before the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Freeport. A memorial fund has been established for Friends Forever Humane Society in Freeport.
