Freeport – Harold A. Simler, 89 of Freeport passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024 with his family at his side.  He was born October 18, 1935 in Ridott, Il to Conrad and Wilhelmina (Meier) Simler.  Harold was a Korean War Veteran of the Army 82nd Airborne serving from 1954-1956.  He married Edith Bonebright on September 15, 1958.  They later divorced, but remained close friends. He loved woodworking and being in his garden, but his greatest joy was being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his son, Mark Simler of Freeport and daughter, Gwen (Eric) Ramage of Freeport and. His grandchildren, Heather Simler of Freeport; Katherine (Ira) Thurmond of Freeport; Marybeth Simler of Freeport; Rachel Ramage of Freeport; Ryan Ramage of Twenty Nine Palms, CA.  His great grandchildren are Roxanne Bushey and Miles Thurmond IV as well as several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved friend, Edith Simler; brothers Albert Simler; Earl Simler, Stanley Simler; grandson, Eric A. Ramage and daughter-in-law, Kelly Simler.

There will be a visitation held on Friday, November 29, 2024 beginning at 10am at Walker Mortuary immediately followed by a service starting at 11am.  His final resting place will be at Oakland Cemetery.
