Hedy Simmer, 92, of Freeport formerly of Rock City, died Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Parkview Home Freeport. Born March 13, 1922 in Bern, Switzerland she was the daughter of John and Hedwig (Brandli) Untersee. She was a graduate of Orangeville High School and St. Francis School of Nursing in Freeport. On January 8, 1944 Hedy and Vernon Simmer were united in marriage at St. Joseph Church in Lena. He preceded her in death in January of 2004. She was a 4H leader for 35yrs, former board member of the Stephenson County Home Extension, Rock Run Extension Unit, St. Ann's Sodality and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Irish Grove. She enjoyed playing cards, swimming and golfing. Surviving are her children Nancy (Rod) Mortimer, Dean (Diane) Simmer both of Rock City; Five grandchildren Lisa (Delbert) DeVries, Tina (Tom) Williamson, Ryan (Christy) Simmer, Travis (Bronwyn) Simmer, Eric (Emily) Simmer; Ten great grandchildren Brittany (Jack) Deem, Chelsey DeVries, Tristan DeVries, Ashley Williamson, Austin Williamson, Tyler Simmer, Hannah Simmer, Kelsey Simmer, Carver Simmer and Grant Simmer; brother Norman (Barb) Untersee; many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, son David, five sister's Helen, Clara, Elsie, Alice, Rosemary, four brother's Edwin, Julius, John and Carl. Visitation will be Thursday 9am until 10:30am at St. Patrick Church, Irish Grove followed by Funeral Mass at 10:30 with Father Matthew Bergschneider officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick Church Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in her name.
