Helen M. Downing 103, of Freeport died Friday, January 31, 2014 at Presence St. Joseph Home in Freeport. Born March 28, 1910 in Freeport, she was the daughter of Carl and Katherine (Fischer) Jahnke. She was a graduate of Freeport High School in 1927. On June 6, 1931 she and Fred Downing were united in marriage and he preceded her in death in 1978. Helen was a twenty-five year member of Crum and Forester retiring in 1974. She was a life-long member of Zion Church in Freeport. Surviving are her children Richard (Barbara) Downing of Weaverville, N.C., Gloria Miller of Heber Springs, AR; four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, two brothers Arthur and Stanley, son-in-law Edwin Miller. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Zion Church with Reverend Gardy Cronk officiating. Visitation will be 12:30 until the time of service. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Freeport.
