CEDARVILLE * Ida Louise Ennenga, 79, of Cedarville died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Freeport Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Freeport.
Ida Louise Curtis was born Aug. 2, 1924, the daughter of Irene Brown and Randall Fuller Curtis, in Sioux City, Iowa.
After graduating from Central High School, she continued her education at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.
In the summer of 1939, while at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, Colo., Ida Lou met her future husband, Tom Ennenga. In a draw of cards for partners, she recalled their draw was the Jack of Diamonds. Her husband said, "She caught me in her crosshairs." Ida Lou and Tom were married June 24, 1944, in Sioux City.
Ida Lou returned to Swarthmore College to finish her education there, receiving her bachelor's degree, when her husband served in the Marine Corps overseas. She entered Rockford College later, and received her master's degree. Mrs. Ennenga taught Art History at Highland Community College.
In 1956, she and her husband bought the neglected birthplace of Jane Addams birthplace in Cedarville, and rebuilt the home to its original beauty.
As the arts and education were important to Ida Lou, she worked with many others in founding Freeport Arts Center, first located at the Henney School building and then moved to the Harlem School building. Her fund-raising efforts with many others helped purchase the farmland where the Highland Community College campus is located. Even later, she worked to benefit Freeport Memorial Hospital in establishing the Heart of Memorial Trust.
Surviving Ida Lou Ennenga is her husband, Thomas; her sister, Carolyn (Norman) Sloan of Sioux City; her son, George of New York; and daughters, Constance (Byron) Starns of St. Paul, Minn., and Lucie (Francois) Gadenne of Marblehead, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.
Her younger son, T. Curtiss, and infant daughter, Carolyn preceded her in death.
Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Mary Hill officiating. Interment of her cremains will be at Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Grace Episcopal Church and Freeport Arts Center.
