Freeport: James R. Adkins, 75 of Freeport, died Tuesday May 16, 2006 at FHN Memorial Hospital.
Born November 19, 1930 in Clinton Iowa he was the son of Marvin and Mildred (Kirkman) Adkins. He married Dolores Schweitzer January 6, 1954.
James worked as a dispatcher for the Illinois Central Railroad for 25 years and then he worked as a supervisor at Micro Switch until 1992.
James was a member of Embury United Methodist Church and a past president of the Morse Telegraph Club. He volunteered at the Silver Creek Railroad Association. A longtime square dancer he belonged to dance clubs in Freeport and Orangeville.
Surviving is his wife, Dolores of Freeport; children, Sarah Gray of Evansdale, Iowa, James (Carol) Adkins Jr. of Cornelius, North Carolina, and Richard (Mary Jean)Adkins of Elmhurst; two sisters, Sarah (Cliff) Hunt of Oak Park and Ruth (Stan) Bond ; 5 grandchildren; several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
There will be a gathering Friday 5 to 7 p.m. at Walker Mortuary. Internment of his cremated remains will be in the Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum.
Private family services will be held.
