James C. Gordon, 87, of Freeport died peacefully Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at his home. Born October 27, 1926 in Freeport he was the son of Albert and Martha (Schafer) Gordon. On September 4, 1954 he and Ellen Brodniki were united in marriage in Stockton. Jim was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1945-1947. He worked for the Inter City Box and Plastic Company for 33 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Freeport VFW, Freeport Moose Lodge No. 162 and Freeport Eagles Club No. 679. Jim enjoyed taking care of his yard, flowers and watching the birds that he would feed. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoyed talking with everyone and giving them a hard time especially the staff at Stephenson Nursing Center. Surviving are his wife Ellen of Freeport, children Ingrid (Dennis) Wolbers of Lanark, Penny (Michael) Omtvedt of Albuquerque, NM, Jeanne Williams of Tempe, AZ; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren; brother Donald (Barb) Gordon of Freeport, sister Jean Wilson of Utah and brother-in-law Harold Bowers of Freeport. Preceding him in death were his parents, sister Mary Bowers and a son-in-law Ted Williams. Cremation rites will be accorded. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Freeport. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. following the visitation. Inurnment of remains will be at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
