James "Jim" Charles Spaide, 78, of Freeport passed away Friday, January 16, 2015, at his home.
Born March 27, 1936 in Freeport he was the son of Vernon C. and Vivian (Slater) Spaide.
Jim graduated from Freeport High School in 1954.
He was a US Army veteran serving from 1958 until 1962.
On June 16, 1963 he married Sherrill Lee Hodgson in Warren.
Jim worked for Northwestern Telephone Company. He was a member of the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
He and Sherrill particularly enjoyed traveling and dancing
Jim enjoyed retirement by spending time with his family. Some of his favorite times involved teasing his grandchildren and attending their events.
He was a long time Amateur Radio Operator and a member of the Freeport Photography Club.
Jim believed in service to others. He and Sherrill were dedicated volunteers to their church and community.
Surviving are his wife, Sherrill of Freeport; his children, Stephen (Rachel) Spaide of Mt. Zion, Karen (Richard) Reid of Ashland, MA, Sharon Spaide of Madison, WI, and Thomas (Jacki) Spaide of Cedarville; his grandchildren, Jacob, Jack-Wesley, Mandy, Madelyne, Lucy, and Ella; and his sister, Dr. Joanne K. (Lynn) Schwandt of Freeport.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Faith United Methodist Church, with funeral services 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Church. Reverend John Lee will officiate.
Burial services will be at the Oakland Cemetery.
Everyone is invited to a reception at Faith United Methodist Church following the burial.
The family wants to thank Dr. Krenke and Dr. Bradley of the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, and the staff at FHN Hospice in Freeport.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Faith United Methodist Church and American Cancer Society.
Jim was devoted to his family. He was always available to offer wise counsel or to help solve a problem. He had a keen sense of humor, which he maintained to his final days.
