Jerome "Dick" L. Huenefeld, age 79 of Freeport, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2024. He was born November 4, 1944; the son of the late Joseph and Lavina (Veer) Huenefeld. He married Susan Babcock on August 15, 1968.
Dick served in the United States Army stationed in Stuttgart, Germany at the post office alongside Tom T. Hall. He worked for the City of Freeport doing various jobs, the last of which was as landfill operator until it closed. Dick was known as "The Pony King" for spending the last 47 years giving pony rides to kids at local events. His father started giving rides in 1948.
He was a member of the Freeport Moose Lodge and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He enjoyed going to auctions and coaching softball in Orangeville with his wife, Susan. He also loved all old rock'n'roll music.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Huenefeld of Freeport; children, Donna Sue Huenefeld of Freeport, Tammy (Ray) Heckman of Freeport, Timothy Huenefeld of Freeport, Cindy (Anthony) Cantrell of Orangeville, IL, and Daniel Huenefeld of McConnell, IL; grandchildren, Kristy (Eric) Crum, Kassey Lewis, Kari Shorey, Brett Huenefeld, Ashley Huenefeld, Kayla Huenefeld, John Heckman, Andriana Huenefeld, Shania Cantrell, and Tony Cantrell; great grandchildren, Parker Pettinger, Allie Huenefeld, Kloe Shorey, Damon Huenefeld, Kamran Huenefeld, Josephine Hardin, Jordan West, Wesley Short, Kalliope Short, Katie Crum, Ella Crum, and Mena Nipshileld; brothers, Joe (Cherry) Huenefeld of Freeport, Randy (Dawn) Huenefeld of Forreston, IL, and Tracy Huenefeld of WI; sisters, Carol (Todd) Hull of Monroe, WI and JoAnn Huenefeld of Freeport; aunts, Marge Bamberg of Freeport, Rita Huenefeld of Scioto Mills, IL, Pat Huenefeld of Lena, IL, Betty Huenefeld of Adeline, IL, and Ruby Rouleau of Manchester, NH. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ted and Leroy; and sister, Lois Monshower.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Walker Mortuary in Freeport. The funeral service will be Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. also at Walker Mortuary. Interment will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be shared at www.walkermortuary.com.
