Jerome J. "Romie" Strohacker, 83, of Freeport died Friday, November 7, 2014 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. Born in Freeport at Deaconess Hospital, January 10, 1931 he was the son of John and Vivian (Borchers) Strohacker. Romie grew up in the farming communities of Baileyville and German Valley where he farmed and attended Forreston High School. He worked at WT Raleigh and was a member of the National Guard where he was based in California before being deployed to Korea. After returning from the Korean War he was quite the entrepreneur including being the owner/operator of Romie's Phillips 66 Gas Station & State Street Pizza and later was a pipe fitter and member of Local 23 for 39 years. After retirement he spent many years of enjoyment with friends and families including trips to Canada & Spain. He was a member of VFW, Eagles Club and the Mason's. Romie enjoyed stock car racing, fishing, piloting, snowmobiling, hunting, snow birding to the Gulf Shore, poker and football. He married Dorene Maxey and they had two children Vicki Swick of Freeport and Kim (Sally) Strohacker of Advance, NC. He then married Rosemary Laske and then Patricia Myers both preceding him in death. Jerome shared the last ten years with loving friend Helen Winters and her family Betsy and Mike George, Dena, Janet, Myra, John, Mark and many grand, great grandchildren and Jerome and Helen's dog Max. Also surviving are Jerome's grandchildren Todd Marten, Curtis and Miles Thomas, Kristen Fredrickson and Emily Strohacker; nine great grandchildren; two brother's Larry (Bobbie) Strohacker of Baileyville and Bruce (Pam) Strohacker of Apple River; special cousin Roland Borchers of Alpharetta, GA. Preceding him in death were his parents, two wives, great grandson Riverdale Fredrickson. Visitation will be Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Walker Mortuary. Funeral service will be Friday at noon at Walker Mortuary with Reverend Alan Cassel officiating. Entombment will be at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum. A memorial has been established in his name.
