Joan M. Boyd, 83 ,of Dakota, died Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. The eldest of five children, she was born March 18, 1932 to Henry and Ilo (Stamm) Schadewaldt.
She graduated as Valedictorian from Dakota High School, later graduating from North Central College in Naperville, IL with honors.
June 18, 1955 she married John Boyd of Glen Ellyn, IL and followed his career with Sears Roebuck setting up housekeeping in over 20 locations throughout the United States. She taught school in 4 different states, but primarily devoted her life to her family.
Joan was an avid fisherman, instrument rated pilot, and really enjoyed adventure. She visited over 30 countries in her last 20 years.
A lifelong member of the Dakota-Rock Grove United Methodist Church she is survived by her husband John of Dakota; their children, Laura (Tom) Sanders of Evergreen, Colorado and Cathy Boyd of Davenport, Florida. (Their son, Geoffrey, was killed in a military airplane accident in 1995); two sisters, Judy (Jerome) Lighthart of Sycamore, IL and Cindy (Dorance) Calhoun of Clinton, IA; three grandchildren, Sarah (Dylan) Reid of Dallas, TX, Zach Boyd of Evergreen, CO and Olivia Sanders of Evergreen, CO. She was preceded in death by her two brothers Arnold and Lynden both of Dakota, IL.
Visitation will be 9:30 to 11:30 am Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Dakota.
Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m. November 7, 2015 at the Dakota-Rock Grove United Methodist Church.
A memorial fund to benefit the Dakota-Rock Grove UMC has been established.
