Freeport - Joan J. Maltry, 88 of Freeport passed away on November 14 th at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL after an extended illiness. She was born in Freeport IL on June 27, 1933 the daughter of the late Chester "Jake" and Julia (Young) Smith. She graduated from Freeport High School. On July 15, 1960 she married Jack Maltry Sr. Together, they raised their family in Freeport. Joan and Jack were lifelong members of St. Joseph's Catholic church. Joan's career spanned over 30 years with the telephone company in Freeport. In the late 70's Joan and Jack acquired her father's business, Smith Transfer Service. Before Joan married Jack, she worked as a switchboard operator at the Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, MI and also, worked at the Virginia Dare Hotel in Norfolk VA. Joan was a very social person with a "gift to gab" always enjoying her time spent with friends; anyone who knew her loved her. Joan enjoyed travelling and loved telling stories of her many travels and adventures. In her younger years she made many trips out East. She was an avid animal lover; being especially fond of Cocker Spaniels, Schnauzers and St. Bernards, rescuing many pets along the way. She found the most enjoyment taking care of her pets, and spending time with her grandkids. She also enjoyed playing Bingo, crafting, painting; especially birdhouses. She is survived by her three children, Jack Maltry Jr. of Freeport, Stephanie (Ronn) Claussen of Beloit, WI and their children, Cayla (Doug) Mitchell and Hannah Claussen; Jill (Ralph) Gleitz of Rockford and their children, Haley Helt, Courtney (David) Kubacki, Jensen Gleitz; along with her great grandchildren; "Aunt" Betty DeGraff of MO who was like a sister to her; her sister Sara Graham of Oregon, IL and her very special friend & Caregiver Brianna, we thank you for being such a bright light in her life. Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband Jack, her son Steven, and her beloved sister Mabel Smith. Private services will be held with burial at Grandview Cemetery in Cedarville IL. A memorial has been established in her name for the Friends Forever Humane Society of Freeport. Condolences can be left for the family at www.walkermortuary.com
