Joanne K. Schwandt , age 84 of Freeport, IL, passed away at home on Saturday, December 10, 2022. She was born May 23, 1938 in Freeport; the daughter of the late Vernon and Vivian (Slater) Spaide. She attended Freeport schools and went on to receive her Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois. She continued her education at the University of Iowa Medical School where she graduated with a PHD. She was a professor at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa for 24 years.

Joanne and Lynn Schwandt were united in marriage on July 27, 1996 in Freeport. She was a member of Faith UMC of Freeport. Her memberships also included the American Dietetic Association, American College of Nutrition Sigma Si (Honorary Science Organization) Alpha Omicron Nu, Midland (Iowa) Dairy Council serving on the board of directors for 22 years, Stephenson County Home Economists, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Freeport Garden Club, and the Golden 'K' Kiwanis.

Joanne enjoyed life and helping others enjoy life. She was a willing giver, supporting many charities over the years. She was also a woman of faith and in her last months she would say, "My illness is not shortening my life, but only shortening my time to meet the Lord." She will be remembered for her sharp wit and infectious sense of humor.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Lynn Schwandt of Freeport; step-children, Suzanne (Tom) Ryan, Peter (Shelia) Schwandt, Andrew (Martha) Schwandt, and David (Rose) Schwandt; 7 step-grandchildren; 1 great step-grandchild; 2 nieces; 2 nephews; and 6 great nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother; and step-grandchild.

The funeral service will take place on Thursday, December 15 ^th at 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church with a visitation before the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum in Freeport.
