Obituary

John Harmon Ewing, Jr. passed peacefully in his sleep into the arms of his loving Savior, on Sunday Dec. 19 th , 2021, a destination he had his eyes on his entire life, and prayed to make it the destination of all those he knew.

John was born Sept. 12, 1932 to John, Sr. & Frances (West) Ewing. He graduated in 1952 from Freeport High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, being a part of the Korean Conflict. He was stationed most of that time in Italy. After serving his 4 year stint, he came home to Cedarville. A good friend, Jim Huber, and Jim's girlfriend, Sharon set him up on a blind date. This was how he met Shirley VanderDrink, and exactly 3 months later to the very hour they were married at Cedarville E.C. Church by Rev. Lew Mills. That was December 24, 1956. Their life together has been a constant hand holding experience. Such a beautiful model for all of us.

John was employed at many different jobs including State Bank, Midwest Bank, Messing & Becker, JCPenney, and Stover Tanks at Freeport. Then Elkay and the Prairie Advocate in Lanark. But the jobs that he really left his mark were as a Pastor at the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren and later the St. James E.C. Church in rural Amboy.

John leaves behind his wife, Shirley; two daughters that loved him fiercely, Kari (Rod) Hartman and Tricia Ewing (Dan Shaulis); also a daughter that doesn't want to be recognized; Eleven grandchildren: Elizabeth, Justin, Arika, Alexis, Austin, Annie, Kevin, Phillip, Josi, Jenna, and John IV; also seventeen great grandchildren; sister, LaLonii (Dennis) Schindler; as well as several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

John is preceded in death by his parents and two sons, John III and Jack Henry.

A special thanks to the care on 2 North at FHN, and to this granddaughter, Elizabeth, who stepped in to be his visitor when Covid took us out.

Cremation rites are being handled by Walker Mortuary and his hope is to have some of his ashes sprinkled in the Holy Land. Due to restrictions, a service will be held January 29, 2022 at 11am at  Cedarville Emmanuel Church. Condolences may be shared at www.walkermortuary.com.
