Freeport: June Keyes, 96, of Freeport died Saturday April 12, 2008 at the Manor Court in Liberty Village, Freeport. Born June 23, 1911 on the family farm in Marathon, Iowa she was the 9th of 11 children to Gustav and Rena (Budzinski) Grey. June graduated from Lincoln-Lee Consolidated School in Marathon, Iowa and then attended Buena Vista College for two years receiving her teaching certificate. She taught at several rural Buena Vista County Schools until her marriage to Lawrence Keyes on December 28, 1936. Lawrence and June lived and farmed in the Marathon area for many years. In June of 1960 June returned to teaching in the Albert City-Truesdale School System where she taught 3rd and 4th grades for 10 years. In 1976 Lawrence and June moved from their family farm to Albert City. June's memberships include the Marathon Methodist Church in Marathon Iowa and Embury United Methodist Church in Freeport Illinois. She was a past member of the Tuesday Study Club in Marathon, Thursday Study Club, Garden Club and Library Board in Albert City. Her interests include reading and gardening. Surviving is her daughter, Mary (Jim) Lee of Freeport; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Terri) Lee of Roselle, IL, Jeff (Theresa) Lee of West Burlington, Iowa and Brian (Sharon) Lee of Mission Viejo, CA; six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence in 2001 and her parents and all of her brothers and sisters. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held 1p.m. Saturday at Embury United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jonathan Singleton officiating. A memorial has been established.
