Obituary

Leroy H. Johnson, 90, of Freeport passed away Monday, March 9, 2015 at Manor Court of Liberty Village in Freeport. Born February 1, 1925 in Freeport he was the son of Elmer A. and Jennie (Ackerman) Johnson. On May 16, 1959 he and Helen Little were united in marriage, she preceded him in death in 1989. He was a United States Army veteran and served in the Philippines during WWII. After his active service Leroy joined the National Guard. For several years he worked for Structo and then at Newell for 28 years and finally he worked part-time for Kmart for 14 years. He also enjoyed working as the crossroad guard and playground supervisor at Blackhawk School. His memberships included VFW, Freeport Moose and the Freeport Eagles Club. He enjoyed bowling and bowled in a couple of local leagues. Surviving are his niece Judith (Jerry) Prasse of Freeport. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, one sister Viola Holbert and two brothers Frederick and Edward "Red". Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Walker Mortuary. Funeral service will be Friday 10 a.m. at Walker Mortuary with Reverend Randy Nicholas officiating. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum in Freeport. A memorial has been established in his name.
