FREEPORT -- LeRoy A. Smith, 90, of Freeport died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at his home. Born March 1, 1914, in Freeport, he was the son of Arthur A. and Edith (Smith) Smith. On Feb. 15, 1936, LeRoy married Dorothy C. Smith in Freeport.
LeRoy was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ. He worked for Newell Company for more than 45 years, retiring in 1980. Mr. Smith was a charter member of the Newell 20-Year Club and the Newell Retirees Club, a member of the Freeport Management Club and the Audubon Society. His hobbies included fishing, photography, the outdoors, traveling and seeing the beautiful country. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy of Freeport; daughter-in-law, Ann Smith of Freeport; one daughter, Laraine (Don) Meyers of Groton, Conn.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Helen Glenke; one son, Arthur; one sister, Viola Feld; one brother, LaVerne; and one infant grandson. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany United Church of Christ with the Rev. Ward Malloy officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Bethany United Church of Christ and from 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to time of service at the church. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
