Linda Margaret Schmitz, 62, of Freeport died Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at University Hospital in Madison. Born February 8, 1951, in Belleville, she was the daughter of Edwin and Rosalia (Kamler) Schmitz. She devoted her life to caring for others. She enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, the Soap Channel and spending time with her kids and grandkids. Surviving are her children, Michael Schmitz of Freeport, James Joseph Barthel of Freeport, Jason (Wendy) Barthel of Davis, Edwin Barthel of Davis; eight grandchildren, Heather, Shane, Anthony Schmitz, Michael Sager, Payton, Caden, Madison and Brianna Barthel; two great-grandchildren, Carbon Ptack, Alexa Maher; two brothers, Donald (Sue) Schmitz, Dennis Schmitz; sister, Rita (Lew) Calkins; along with many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents; one brother, Hiram "Butch" Schmitz; son, Eugene Schmitz; and special friend, Gary "Kokomo" Ailstock. A celebration of life will be 4-6 p.m. Monday January 13, 2014 at Walker Mortuary. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor Tony Atansio of Faith Community Church of Davis officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded.
