Freeport: Lyall Taubert, 87, of Freeport died Tuesday November 13, 2007 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport. Born October 8, 1920 in Durand, IL. He was the son of August and Mabel (Morrison) Taubert. On February 27, 1943 he married Cecilia Noyes in Sioux Falls, SD. Lyall served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1942-1945 During this time he was stationed in Europe as a Radio Operator-Gunner on a B-17 Bomber. On his 17th mission on January 4, 1944 he was shot down and was a prisoner of war in Krems, Austria Stalag 17B until his release in 1945. He received his Masters in Education from the University of Illinois in 1954. He was a member of Embury United Methodist Church for over 40 years. A District Governor for Lions International and Past President of both Pearl City and Freeport Lions Clubs, he was Chairman of the Stephenson County Chapter of the Red Cross, Chairman of Region II School Superintendents Association, State President of the Illinois Lung Association, Chairman of the Stephenson County Republican Central Committee, Chairman of the Freeport Elks Lodge Scholarship Committee, Illinois Retired Teachers Association and Freeport Historical Society. Surviving are his wife Cecilia of 64 years; one son, Gregory (Ingie) Taubert; one Duaghter, Patricia (Donald) Bennett; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Bennett) Berk and Heather Bennett; three great grandchildren, Ian Berk, Alaina Berk and Halle Berk; one sister, Jean Norsworthy and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Geraldine Fuchs and Carol Cummings. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Embury United Methodist Church, Freeport with the Reverend Jonathan Singleton officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Freeport. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Walker Mortuary. In lieu of flowers the family requests all memorials be directed to the Highland Community College Scholarship Fund in Lyall's memory.
