Lyman "Lee" Okey died August 1 at his home in Freeport. He was born to Clyde and Vivian (Schwartzhof) Okey in Dubuque, Iowa on March 9, 1939. On February 13, 1960 He married Janice Miller.

Lee graduated from Aquin High School and attended Loras College in Dubuque and Rockford College.

Lee worked in retail and managed Weise Reads in Freeport before taking a position in the advertising department at The Freeport Journal Standard. In 1984 he and Jan moved to Pekin where he worked for the Pekin Daily Times. He then went on to manage several community newspapers in the Peoria area. In 1992 he and Jan moved to Mooseheart Child City in Batavia where they worked as a team as houseparents. Eventually, Lee became supervisor of Security and Transportation until he retired in 2009.

Lee enjoyed playing tennis and golf and umpired baseball and refereed basketball for many years. He also coached a number of youth sports over the years, including baseball, basketball and track and field. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 682 in Batavia. He and Jan loved traveling and spending time with family.

Lee is survived by his wife, Jan of Freeport; his children, Lori (David) Rundall of Cedarville, Dave Okey of Los Angeles, CA and Douglas Okey and his wife Susie Mathews of Peoria, IL., sisters Linda Wirtz of Elkorn,Wi and Joan Kadlubowski of Florida; granddaughters, Laura Thurman of Davenport, IA, Audrey Simmons of Peoria, Emily Kate Kelley of Mulberry Grove, IL, and Sarah Houchlei Greene of San Francisco, CA; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James (Bonnie) Okey and sister Mary (David) Borkavan .



In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for St. Mary's Catholic Church

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Memorial service Mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday August 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church on Monday.

Burial will be private.
