Lynn Clark Schwandt, age 95 of Freeport, IL, passed away at WinnPrairie Assisted Living and Memory Care on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Born on December 23, 1930, in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Gustave and Madeline (Clark) Schwandt. He attended Earlville IA schools and received degrees from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA and University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA, where he was a professor for 28 years. After retiring from Northern Iowa, he worked at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, IA until he retired again.
Lynn married Katherine Murphy on June 5, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, IA and together they raised four children and were married for 40 years before Katherine’s passing on December 25, 1992. He later married Joanne Spaide in Freeport on July 27, 1996, and they were married for 27 years before Joanne’s passing on December 10, 2022.
Lynn served in the US Army 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was a member of the National Council of Teachers Mathematics, School Science and Mathematics Association, Faith United Methodist Church of Freeport, IL, Freeport Golden K Kiwanis Club, and was a Charter member of the Rough Risers Kiwanis Club in Cedar Falls, IA. Lynn loved gardening and was also a member of the Freeport Gardening Club.
Lynn is survived by his children, Suzanne (Tom) Ryan of Waterloo, IA, Peter (Sheila) Schwandt of El Cajon, CA, Andrew (Martha) Schwandt of Marshalltown, IA, and David (Rose) Schwandt of Cape Coral, FL, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His sister, Edith Winistorfer of Marion, IA and brother David R Schwandt of Earlville, IA and many nieces, nephews, and step nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard Schwandt, Carl Schwandt; and one grandchild.
The funeral services will take place July 18th 2pm at Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport, IL with a visitation before the service beginning at 1pm. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum in Freeport. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the charity of the giver’s choice.
