Marian J. Mooney of Freeport passed away on August 12, 2022 at the age of 92.
Marian was born on October 17, 1929 to Chester and Cora Strohecker. She attended South Side grade school in Freeport and graduated from Freeport High School in 1947. In 1949, she married William Mooney and raised three sons, Steven, William and Mark Mooney and one daughter, Jeri Broge.
Marian owned and operated with her husband Mooney's Grocery Store and the Corner Kitchen restaurant during the 60's and 70's. She then worked at Micro Switch for many years until retirement. She later worked part-time jobs at NICAA Golden Meals, Country Inn and Suites and worked as a substitute in Food Service for Freeport School District.
She loved gathering with family, and especially playing games and cards with her children, brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. She was a wealth of knowledge for all family members and many went to her for information and guidance. She loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with her sisters and family members. She especially loved working in her yard where she could sit and watch the birds and admire her gardening.
Survivors include her son William (Lisa) Mooney of Groveland, IL, daughter Jeri (Doug) Broge of Freeport, daughter-in-law Adrienne Mooney of Freeport, sister Grace Schatz of Winnebago, IL and sisters-in-law Virginia Strohecker of Arthur IL and Dorothy Strohecker of Freeport, IL. Also surviving are eight grandchildren from Freeport, IL; Tim Broge (Nicole), Jerome Broge, Lisa Thompson (Nick), Aaron Mooney, LuAnne (Sean Thurman) Mooney, and Tara (Corey) Davis of Morton, IL, Heather Morrison of Pekin, IL and Michael Mooney of Groveland, IL as well as twenty great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Cora Strohecker, husband William Mooney, two sons, Steven Mooney and Mark Mooney as well as three brothers, Dale Strohecker, Chester Strohecker, Delmer Strohecker, and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ella Mae (Elmer) Pehl and Sadie (James) Scheideggar.
A visitation and service will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2022 from 4– 7 p.m. at Walker Mortuary. A private graveside service for family will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery on Saturday, August 20, 2022. A memorial fund has been established for the Salvation Army.
