Marissa Kay Schmidt, also known to her loved ones as Rissa, Smurfet, and Ladybug, a cherished daughter, sister, and devoted friend from Freeport, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the age of 31.
Born on August 24, 1994, Marissa illuminated the lives of her family and friends with her genuine kindness and radiant spirit. She graduated from Aquin High School in 2013 and dedicated her professional life to the service industry, working most recently at McDonalds and Goodwill, where her friendly presence was appreciated by customers and colleagues alike. Marissa was known for her strong work ethic and a remarkable willingness to learn and adapt, always striving to improve and grow in her roles.
Marissa possessed an immense love for animals, who were her constant and faithful companions. She was a woman of diverse interests; she loved crocheting, settling in with a good book, and was often found listening to and singing music. She also enjoyed hiking and finding peace and solace in nature. Above all, she treasured her family and friends, pouring her energy into creating memories, sharing laughter, and being a dependable source of support for those she loved.
She is survived by her loving mother, Susan Koester, and her devoted brothers, Kevin Schmidt (Diane Lou) and Arthur Schmidt, as well as her paternal grandmother, Katherine Schmidt.
Marissa was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Schmidt; her godmother, Misty Witt; her paternal grandfather, Edward Schmidt; her maternal grandparents, Dick and JoAnn Koester, and other close relatives.
Marissa's life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Harmony United Methodist Church, 2600 W Pearl City Road, Freeport, IL 61032.
● A Memorial Gathering for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
● A Memorial Service will begin at 12:00 p.m.
● A Luncheon will follow the service at the church hall.
The family encourages guests to dress casually—Marissa would want everyone to be comfortable. In remembrance of Marissa's vibrant spirit, guests are invited to bring a small trinket or memento to place around her ashes, a gesture to honor the joy and love she brought into their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to assist with Marissa's funeral expenses. Donations may be made payable to Susan Koester.
