Melissa Ann Kundert, 55, of Freeport; Passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 6th in the comfort of her home surrounded by those she loves most and most importantly her fur babies.
Missy was born on April 23rd to Nancy (Carmona) Bonetti and adopted by Ken and Betty Kundert 6 days later.
Melissa was a class of ‘89 graduate from Freeport High School and continued on to Highland Community College and Rockford Business College, studying to become a Certified Medical Assistant until she was abruptly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After the diagnosis she worked various positions at different banking institutions until her daughter Kasey Ann was born.
Her humor, radiant smile, and vibrant personality could light up any room she was in. Even in the face of her diagnosis, she refused to let it define her. She continued to show strength, grace, and a spirit that remained unmistakably her own.
Missy loved country music and traveling across the country to various musical festivals and concerts. She found so much joy in the simple moments, especially camping in her younger years with friends and family.
Most of these, she was her daughter's biggest fan. Melissa loved Kasey with her entire being. She made absolutely every effort that she could to show up for Kasey at all of her orchestra concerts, dance recitals, graduation, and all of her most important events. Kasey was the light of her life and the reason for putting up such a strong fight. Missy’s greatest goal in life was just to be able to see Kasey grow up.
She was an incredible mother, pouring her love, strength, and guidance into Kasey in a way that shaped who she is today. But her care extended far beyond that—she was also a devoted sister, a loving daughter, and a loyal friend. Missy had many lifelong friends whom she met in her early grade school years, and she carried those friendships with her until the very end — something truly rare and special to see nowadays. She showed up for the people in her life with compassion, humor, and a steady presence that made others feel seen, supported, and deeply valued.
Missy’s faith in the Lord was the foundation of her life. She carried a quiet but unwavering devotion, trusting God in every season and reflecting His love through her kindness, strength, and grace. Her relationship with the Lord guided the way she lived and loved others, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Missy was deeply blessed to one day find and connect with her birth mother, a reunion she had long hoped for and never gave up searching for. She cherished every moment spent with Nancy and her family. She often saw this connection as one of life’s divine appointments—timing and circumstances that felt guided and meaningful beyond coincidence.
Missy is survived by her only child and daughter Kasey, her mother Betty Kundert, brother Tim Kundert (Wendy), nephews Broc (Brittany), Chad (Becky), 2 great nieces & 2 great nephews, Aunts Betty Jane Kundert (Mary), Shirley Hulscher, as well as cousins & supportive friends. She will be deeply missed by her beloved fur babies, who brought her so much comfort and joy. Her bond with them was something truly special, especially with her favorite, Anni. She was always so excited to see Anni and just snuggle with her. A simple moment that meant everything to her.
Missy will be met at Heavens gate by her Father, Ken, biological Mother, Nancy, and husband Jeff. Along with her grandparents, and other distant relatives. Also meeting her at heavens gate is Kasey’s father Michael Crimmins. She will be so proud to share with him all about Kasey—the growth she’s experienced, the strength she’s shown, and all she has accomplished over the past four years since his passing. Her love and pride for their daughter were constant, and that love carries on beyond this life.
In honoring Melissa’s wishes, she will be cremated and remembered for the beautiful life, love, and strength she shared with everyone around her. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, her spirit and memory will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.
The services will be held on Saturday, May 30th at Crossroads Community Church, located at 1668 Crossroads Ln, Freeport, Illinois 61032.
