Freeport-Mildred F. Downing, 83, of Freeport, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at her home.
Born May 21, 1922 in Freeport she was the daughter of Reuben and Velma (Shippy) Nelson. She married James J. Downing Jr. January 12, 1946 and he died July 15, 1995.
She worked at Burgess Battery, then 25 years at Micro Switch, then Malcolm Eaton, then did volunteer work at FACC.
She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ.
Surviving are four daughters, Patricia Downing of Los Angeles, CA, Dale (Murray) Sloan of Titusville, FL, Linda Downing and Jackie (Rodney) Dyson both of Freeport; one son, Steven (Kathy) Downing of Quincy; 10 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; 1 sister, Veneta (John) Krogull of Freeport; 2 brothers, Daryl (Herta) Casselman of Orangeville and Larry Casselman of Freeport; her sister in-laws, Ann and Sylvia Nelson both of Freeport.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 4 brothers; 2 sisters; 2 grandsons; 1 great granddaughter.
Funeral service will be Tuesday 2 p.m. at Walker Mortuary with her daughter, Linda Downing officiating.
Visitation will be Tuesday 1 p.m. until time of service at Walker Mortuary.
Following the service cremation rites will be accorded and her cremated body will be buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
A memorial has been established in her name.
